Martha Reeves to make Opera Debut
with Special Appearance in Porgy & Bess Saturday, November 4, 2006
Detroit, October 31, 2006…Motown legend and Detroit City Councilwoman Martha Reeves will make her Michigan Opera Theatre debut this Saturday in the role of Strawberry Woman, in the Gershwins’ Great American Opera, Porgy and Bess.
“Martha saw the show on opening night, and was so taken by the performance that she wanted to be a part of it. She called me, and asked if we could find her a walk-on role for a performance. The role of Strawberry Woman seemed a perfect fit, and so we made it happen,” said David DiChiera, Founder and General Director of Michigan Opera Theatre.
The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is a tale of community, love and loss, set in South Carolina, during the 1920s. Strawberry Woman, a fruit peddler to the community, makes a brief appearance during the opera’s second act.
Michigan Opera Theatre’s 2006 production of Porgy and Bess opened on October 21, and will conclude Sunday, November 5. Tickets are available for both remaining performances (Saturday 11/4 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 11/5 at 2:30 p.m.). Ms. Reeves will sing Strawberry Woman for the Saturday performance only. Tickets range from $28-$120, and are available at the Detroit Opera House ticket office (1526 Broadway, Detroit 48226), by phone at (313) 237-7464 or online at www.MichiganOpera.org.
