BIRMINGHAM, September 1, 2006…The Michigan District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions will again offer talented young singers the opportunity to audition for the Metropolitan Opera here in the Detroit area. Michigan District Auditions will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the stage of the Detroit Opera House in Detroit. The event is co-sponsored by Michigan Opera Theatre.
The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions is a program designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. Applicants must have a voice with operatic potential as well as strong musical training and background. They must be between the ages of 20 and 30, and able to sing correctly in more than one language and show evidence of artistic aptitude.
The District Auditions require applicants to be prepared to sing five operatic arias in the original languages and keys, and consisting of contrasting languages and styles. Arias should be commensurate with the singer’s age and level of ability. The applicants will be permitted to sing first an aria of his/her choice; then, the judges may request another aria (or arias) for purpose of comparison.
On January 14, 2007, winners of the District Auditions will be invited to sing at the Great Lakes Regional auditions in Buffalo, NY. The National Auditions Semi-Finals and Grand Finals Concert take place at the Metropolitan Opera in March.
The application deadline for the Michigan District is October 23. Vocalists meeting the above qualifications who are interested in auditioning in Detroit on November 11 may view detailed requirements and download an application at www.metoperafamily.org.
