DETROIT, Michigan, April 25, 2007…The Summer Dance Intensive returns to the Margo V. Cohen Dance Center at the Detroit Opera House July 23 through August 17, 2007 offering a diverse experience for the serious dancer. This rigorous dance intensive provides the serious dance student optimal technical and performance training in a positive, nurturing environment. Each year, international guest artists instruct and train students, imparting technical fundamentals that will be valuable in a variety of performance settings.

The Summer Dance Intensive at the Detroit Opera House is a full-time day program for students ages 10-25 who demonstrate commitment and talent in ballet. Two separate programs will be offered: Ballet and Modern Dance for Pre-Professional Dancers for ages 14-25 (July 23-August 3) and Ballet for Beginning/Intermediate Dancers for ages 10-13 (August 6-17).

Instructors for the Summer Dance Intensive are Charmaine Hunter, former principal ballerina with Dance Theater of Harlem and current dance instructor for Cirque du Soleil; Gina Ellis, former dancer with George Faison, Donald McKayle and Eleo Pomare, and Michael Anderson, former dancer with the Joffrey Ballet.

Criteria for acceptance into the Summer Dance Intensive at the Detroit Opera House include ballet and modern dance training, commitment to progressively challenging technique classes and significant interest in performance. Applications for the program are due July 15, 2007. Both programs are $400, and scholarships are available for students who qualify. Scholarship auditions will be held at the Detroit Opera House on May 5, 2007 at 2 p.m. and in the Detroit Public Schools June 18 from 3:30 – 4:30 at Renaissance High School, June 19 from 3:30 – 4:30 at Cass Tech High School, and June 20 from 3:30 – 4:30 at King High School.

Each two-week dance intensive culminates in an exciting performance in the fully-equipped Chrysler Black Box Theatre in the Detroit Opera House. The informal performance setting enlivens the summer dance experience, allowing students to demonstrate their growth in front of a live audience. The final performance of the first workshop for Pre-Professional Dancers is Friday, August 3 at 4 p.m. The Beginning and Intermediate dancers’ final performance is Friday, August 17, 2007 at 4 p.m.
